ACI 318

The US building code for structural concrete, used for reinforced-concrete foundation design.

What it is

ACI 318, “Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete” by the American Concrete Institute, is the primary reinforced-concrete design code in the US and is widely referenced worldwide.

Design method

Strength design (USD): factored loads compared against nominal strength reduced by strength-reduction factors (φ).

Key checks (foundations)

  • Flexure and minimum reinforcement
  • One-way shear and two-way (punching) shear
  • Bearing and reinforcement development length
