Guide
AS 4100
The Australian Standard for steel structure design (Standards Australia).
What it is
AS 4100, “Steel Structures”, is the primary standard for steel design in Australia, used with the AS/NZS 1170 loading suite.
Design method
Limit-state design with a capacity factor φ (typically 0.9): design capacity φRu must be no less than the design action effect from factored loads.
Key checks
- Section and member moment capacity (including lateral buckling)
- Compression capacity — using the form factor kf for slender sections
- Shear and combined actions (axial + bending)

⚠ Educational overview, not case-specific design advice — always reference the full standard and have a licensed engineer certify the design before construction.
