CSA S16
The Canadian standard for steel structure design (CSA Group).
What it is
CSA S16, “Design of Steel Structures”, is the primary steel design standard in Canada, used with the National Building Code of Canada (NBCC).
Design method
Limit States Design: factored resistance φRn (typically φ = 0.90 for steel) must be no less than the factored load effect.
Key checks
- Tension — gross-section yielding and net-section rupture
- Compression — flexural buckling by section class
- Flexure (Class 1–4 classification and LTB), shear and combined forces
