IS 800
The Indian standard for steel structure design (IS 800:2007, Bureau of Indian Standards).
What it is
IS 800:2007, “General Construction in Steel — Code of Practice”, is India's primary steel design standard; the 2007 revision adopted Limit State Design.
Design method
Limit State Design with material partial safety factors γm0 = 1.10 (yielding/section) and γm1 = 1.25 (rupture/stability).
Key checks
- Tension — gross-section yielding (γm0) and net-section rupture (γm1)
- Compression — buckling curves
- Flexure — section classification (plastic/compact/semi-compact/slender) and LTB, shear

⚠ Educational overview, not case-specific design advice — always reference the full standard and have a licensed engineer certify the design before construction.
